Fraud. It is a scary, dangerous thing, and it can happen to anyone. Identity fraud, Insurance fraud, Rental fraud. Renting a property that isn’t available or doesn’t exist, never meeting your landlord or tenant in person and having them swindle or con you. These are all real things, thing you want to protect yourself against. It’s more likely to happen to you if you don’t know what to look for so you can prevent frauds from conning you. Luckily, we have a few ways to help you avoid rental fraud.
DO look for the Realtor Logo, it assures you are working with a licensed agent.
DON’T wire money to anyone overseas
DO check Realtor.com along with several other sources to make sure the property you are looking at has the same information and price on ALL the websites.
DON’T make agreements and sign leases without seeing both the property and the Property Manager/Realtor or Owner.
DO your research, if you can’t find any record of the person or company you are trying to rent from, that is a RED FLAG
And overall, DO be smart, if something seems weird, bad, off, too good to be true, ANYTHING, ask to see some of the above information to see about getting some piece of mind. If you don’t get any, you should keep looking, you will find a house that meets your needs and is a legitimate property if you look hard enough.
